Free watershed tours for Vancouver Island university students pursuing water industry careers

Are you a university student curious about careers in the water industry?

This fall, the Capital Regional District (CRD) is offering an exciting opportunity to learn more about watershed management and a variety of careers in the water industry through their exclusive university edition watershed tours.

These tours, specifically designed for university students, provide a behind-the-scenes look at the processes involved in watershed management, water conservation, water treatment and a wide range of careers in this essential sector.

The five-and-a-half-hour tours offer an in-depth exploration of the Sooke Lake Reservoir and its surrounding environment.

Students will learn how water is sourced, treated, and delivered to ensure the highest quality drinking water. The experience includes a guided forest walk, visits to key water supply facilities, and a comprehensive overview of the treatment process.

What sets these tours apart from regular public watershed tours is their educational focus tailored for students aimed at inspiring students to consider careers in the water industry.

Students will have the chance to hear directly from water professionals about their career paths, ask questions about various jobs within the water industry and participate in a Q&A session to gain insights into the technical aspects of water operations, watershed management, environmental protection and water treatment.

The tours are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on September 21st and 22nd and October 6th. September tours will leave from parking lot 10 at UVic campus and October tours leave from the PISE’s parking lot at Camosun Interurban Campus.

Please note, you do not have to be a UVic or Camosun student to attend the University tour, but you must be a university student to attend. UVic and Camosun campuses are being utilized for pick up purposes only.

With spaces limited to 42 students per tour, interested students are encouraged to register early using their university email address.

This tour is exclusively available to university students aged 19 and older who are interested in exploring careers in the water industry. Students should dress appropriately for outdoor activities, avoiding open-toed shoes and dress in layers, as the weather can change rapidly inside the watershed.

It’s important to bring essentials like lunch, water, sunscreen, and bug spray. For more information and to help you prepare for the tour, please review the CRD’s Frequently Asked Questions.

This is a unique chance to learn about the critical work involved in water management and explore potential career opportunities in a field that plays a crucial role in sustaining our communities.

Don’t miss out on this valuable experience!
